Xero's API "Tax": How to Beat the Overage Sting

Xero's API "Tax": How to Beat the Overage Sting
As of March 2026, Xero is pulling the plug on its "all-you-can-eat" data buffet. In a massive shift for the ecosystem, they are replacing the old revenue-share model with strict, usage-based pricing tiers. For many developers and firms, this means one thing: the risk of massive overage fees that could cripple innovation.
But there is a better way. Firehawk Analytics has already built the solution to help you avoid these extra costs without sacrificing a single insight—keeping your data flow quick, easy, and affordable.
The New Tiered Structure
Starting March 2, 2026, partners will be moved into one of five monthly tiers (all prices in AUD, tax exclusive):
- Starter ($0 / month): For early-stage apps; allows up to 5 connections.
- Core ($35 AUD / month): For small integrations; allows up to 50 connections and includes 10 GB of monthly data egress.
- Plus ($245 AUD / month): For growing apps; allows up to 1,000 connections and includes 50 GB of monthly data egress.
- Advanced ($1,445 AUD / month): For high-volume partners; allows up to 10,000 connections and includes 250 GB of monthly data egress.
- Enterprise (Price on Application): For the largest players; offers unlimited connections and custom data volumes.
The $2.40 "Overage" Sting
The most significant change for high-volume users is the introduction of usage-based penalties. For the Core, Plus, and Advanced tiers, if your app exceeds its monthly data allotment, you will be charged:
$2.40 AUD per GB of excess data egress.
While Xero is exempting the "Organisation" endpoint from these counts, the costs for deep data integrations can still escalate into the thousands very quickly.
The Firehawk Advantage
Firehawk Analytics has created the solution to avoid the "overage" without losing your insights—quick and easy. Don't let rising API costs throttle your business intelligence.
AI Restrictions & Industry Impact
This update isn't just about fees; it’s about protecting the wall. Xero’s updated terms now explicitly prohibit the use of API data to train AI or machine learning models. This is a defensive move to ensure user data isn't used to build unauthorized AI tools.
Experts warn that these new costs will likely be passed down to small business owners, potentially making third-party apps more expensive or forcing developers to reduce support and features to balance the books.
Key Dates for Your Calendar
- 2 March 2026: The new pricing model and tiered structure officially go live for all existing partners.
- 1 July 2026: Deadline to migrate all customers off Xero App Store Subscriptions (XASS) and onto independent billing.
The "buffet" may be over, but your insights don't have to be. Now is the time to optimize your data strategy before the first bill arrives.
